New House Decor Inspiration and Mood Boards
I keep going back to these mood boards before buying anything to decorate our new home. Even after almost a year in our home, we’re largely unpacked and undecorated. It’s just a tiny bit hard to get major house projects done with a baby and active preschooler to wrangle.
Main Bedroom
Color scheme
I always want our bedroom to feel like an oasis. I want the colors to be soft and calming to set the scene for a restorative night of sleep. We don’t spend much time in our bedroom other than sleeping and getting ready for the day but I do have a little reading nook carved out.
Art
We have a long hallway/entryway into our bedroom where I’d love to hang a gallery wall. We’ve collected a ton of local art from friends over the years and it would be the perfect place to highlight some of our collection mixed in with family photos.
Lighting
I’d love to incorporate some sconce lighting, even if they’re plugged in instead of hard-wired. I like a vintage look with some modern metal colors. I spend a lot of time reading and nursing in our bedroom currently and it’s nice to have some mood lighting instead of the harsh overhead lighting in the evenings and early mornings.
Textiles
Instead of adding warmth through color, I think you can accomplish the same look through layering textures.
Storage
I hate visual clutter so baskets are key! We have a few of the IKEA baskets and eventually, I’d like to upgrade our laundry baskets to something a little nicer.
Dining Room
Table
A must-have for our dining room is a table meant for entertaining. I love the warmth that a rich, brown wood brings to a more modern silhouette like angled legs. We ended up with one with love from Target.
Chairs
A mix of chairs adds personality and lets the diner pick something that matches their comfort needs. We have a couple of faux-leather padded chairs and rattan chairs on the ends.
Display Cabinet
This has been the hardest to narrow down, especially with manufacturing and shipping delays. We’re holding out for a set of the IKEA Billy cabinets with glass on top.
Rug
We reused our old living room rug, a hand-me-down from my Mother-in-Law!
Lighting
One of the first changes we made in our house was adding a modern chandelier ordered from Amazon.
Table Setting
Truthfully, setting the table requires keeping our table clear. I don’t think we’re quite there yet but the few times we’ve served a formal dinner at home we’ve brought over a set of tapers to light and used our rattan placemats to protect the table.
Living Room
Sectional
A good sectional was a must to fill the space. Our ceilings are really tall and our low-profile IKEA sofa wasn’t cutting it. We settled on a grey sectional with a chaise section from Rooms to Go and it arrived the day we brought home my son from the hospital! It was much easier recovering from a c-section to get up and down from a sofa that sits a bit higher off the ground.
Textiles
Blankets and throw pillows bring in pops of color and lots of texture. We went with a rug that matched the color of our old pillows. I’m rethinking all the pillows now, though. I hate constantly rearranging them and no one really seems to use them.
Lighting
Our builder’s grade lighting isn’t the most beautiful but we can’t live without fans in the South.
Greenery
We’re taking advantage of all the natural light in our living room to grow seedlings this spring but it’s my goal to bring in some more permanent greenery, perhaps a few plant stands! Right now we only have our old fake plants on display along with some succulents.
Coffee table
Having a round was a necessity. I know in a matter of months we’ll have a walker on our hands and they don’t call them toddlers without reason! We’ve got a lot of use out of our coffee table. We frequently eat meals in front of the TV, play with puzzles, and facilitate snack time. Plus the design makes it really easy to push out of the way to open up more space for playtime on the floor.
