Happy New Year!
It might not surprise you that I failed to stick to my 2023 reading goal…
Read less.
So why bother setting the same goal in 2024 knowing that once again, I might not be successful?
After 6 years of intentionally reading for fun again, I have a better sense of the types of books I like. In the New Year, I’m continuing to focus on quality over quantity. I hope it’s the year that I finally quit reading books that aren’t working for me before the 50% mark. Marking a book as DNF (did not finish) is a learned skill for those of us who simply must know how something ends so be sure to give yourself some grace.
Once again I am leaning into my intuition to select books based on my mood instead of what’s popular on bookstagram.
This is a peek at my January TBR stack.
Goodreads Challenge
Yes, I still use Goodreads. And yes, I’m aware it’s owned by Amazon. I’ve tried other trackers but I’m obsessed with entering Giveaways (it’s part of my morning coffee routine) and as a member since 2011, it’s where I feel most comfortable + my IRL friends are reviewing books. I’m setting my Goodreads reading challenge goal at 25 and committing to reading just 30 minutes before bed most nights. Just a reminder that whether you read 1 book or 100 books this year, you’re still a reader. I’m happy to have you here as a subscriber to Overbooked Mama and I hope you find your next great read in my reviews this year.
Reading more eBooks
For a while, I was collecting stacks of physical books but now I’m reserving our shelf space for two distinct categories:
books I want to save for my kids to read
books I recommend and would lend out
Everything else I’m fine with borrowing from the library or reading on my Kindle. I tend to read faster on my Kindle and have started requesting more ARCs in that format as well. That should mean fewer trips to donate books to our local LFLs in the coming year.
My Rereading Challenge
In 2024 I’m planning to reread a selection of books that were significant to me at different times in my life. Many of my original copies are still on my bookshelves but there are a handful I’m planning to thrift that were probably borrowed from my elementary school library. Reading has meant so much to me for so long and I am getting all the warm and fuzzy feelings just thinking about this project.
Are you setting any reading goals this year? I’m always curious about what guides your reading habits.
Hey Kuleigh! I just set my goal today on Goodreads. I'm also using StoryGraph because I love the statistics and breakdowns you get from what you're reading and tbr.
I read 175 books this last year, but I'm setting my goal lower because with doing my newsletter I don't have as much time to read as I have.
Hope you are having a good new year. 📚🐛
I love this simple goal! I think simple is always best. I love what you said about leaning into intuition when picking what you want to read next, I want to practice that more this year too ◡̈
