Kid Songs that won't grind your gears
because we are all very tired of listening to the Wheels on the Bus by Cocomelon on Spotify.
Hi! I’m Kuleigh (pronounced Cully), a chronically over-caffeinated mom of two with a voracious appetite for books. I write about books and motherhood here on Substack. Like the rest of the southeast, I’m bracing myself for the potential flooding impacts of Hurricane Debby. I hope you and your family are safe and this newsletter inspires you to find some glimmers throughout your day.
Idk what it is about Baa Baa Black Sheep but the chokehold that song has on my children is unmatched. I have an entire Spotify playlist dedicated to different versions of the song that I created after my daughter turned one. On days when you just cannot stand to listen to another traditional nursery rhyme, there’s hope out there for you Elder Emos and Indie Scene Queens.

There are quite a few Apple Music Playlists I love and keep on rotation when we’re able to take a break from asking Alexa to play Shake it Off by Taylor Swift like The Kids Table, Playdate Fun!, and Summer Fun! are great playlists to start within the Kids Music genre.
I’m excited for the new Bluey album Rug Island and I’m sure we’ll be preordering the vinyl in advance of the October release date.
If you’re a Yoto player family, don’t forget about Yoto Radio!
I’ve mentioned in previous editions of this newsletter that we’re huge fans of listening to themed playlists for family dinner nights. Creating a music-rich environment not only keeps kids entertained but also fosters their love for music from a young age.
So, who are your go-to artists for kid-friendly tunes?

There’s a great “Jazz for Kids” record from 2004 that we all enjoy. It starts off with Ella Fitzgerald playing Old MacDonald but in such a fun way. It’s always a hit!
I’m sure you know, but Casper Babypants, who I also love when I must go for the kids specific music, is the lead singer of The Presidents of the United States of America and I found that fact so fun and also gave me an excuse to introduce my kids to the songs Lump and Peaches which are maybe not so strictly for kids but are still pretty fun!
