March is the month when the year really gets started in my mind. Spring is definitely in the air. In the past few weeks we’ve seen 80-degree temperatures and every flat surface is covered with a thick layer of chalky yellow pollen. My sinuses are out to get me and I’m so zonked in the evenings I haven’t made as much time for reading. Even though I’m already hot and cranky, there’s a lot on the horizon I’m looking forward to in the next few months.
We’ll be planting our garden soon. We are a little late to start seedlings but our growing season is very long in Zone 8. Last Fall we chucked some rotting heirloom pumpkins in our raised beds and they’re growing like weeds! My husband picked through some of the best seedlings and transplanted them into cups. When they’re a little further along we are planning to find a place to plant them. I can’t wait to see what pops up.
I ordered a new set of Aerogarden herb pods and a top priority for this week is giving our Harvest Elite system a deep clean so we can get those seeds started. This year I’m planning to grow herbs in containers so that we can keep them near the front or back porch for easy access when cooking. I love the idea of a kitchen garden (a potager or kailyaird). Maybe someday we’ll have a better design. For now, I’m happy to grow a few vegetables we love to eat like tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, bell peppers, and jalapenos even if our setup is a bit rustic. It’s nice to be able to supplement our summer meals with food we’ve grown. It’s a huge relief on our grocery bill as well!
Loving Lately
Here are a few things I’ve been loving lately.
Read: In addition to my daily readings, I’ve been working my way through My Last Innocent Year by Daisy Alpert Florin. I highly recommend this coming-of-age campus novel to anyone who enjoyed Vladimir by Julia May Jonas or A Very Nice Girl by Imogen Crimp last year.
Watch: In February my husband and I finally finished Dead to Me Season 3. While I was bored for most of it, the last two episodes of the series wrecked me!
I feel like we are the last people to watch Wednesday but we committed to watching it during dinnertime last week. The first several episodes didn’t hold my attention. I have to admit it is a bit more teen drama than I was expecting from Tim Burton. It’s kooky but I want more horror. I pictured it being more similar to the Sabrina reboot. Anyway, the series picked up for me at Episode 4 and the now famous TikTok Rave’N dance scene. My daughter has become a bit enamored with Wednesday and has taken to wearing her patent leather Mary Jane shoes almost every day. We might have a future Goth on our hands.
I was excited to start Outer Banks Season 3. So much so that I put the premiere date on my iCal. I’m taking it really slowly. I wish I had more time than Wednesday at lunch for personal TV watching! I’m interested to see where they take the storyline. I’ve heard the last episode is a good one.
I joined in on a watch party for the Daisy Jones & The Six premiere with some people on Bookstagram and really enjoyed the first episode! It might be our new Friday night show. I read the book back in 2020 so it was a huge refresher. I was surprised by how many characters they introduced right off the bat. I also wasn’t sure if they’d incorporate the interviews into the show but I’m glad they did since it’s such a huge part of the way the book is written.
Wear: I started this month with 3 new shoe additions. I know that seems like a lot but I went with Spring and Summer staples that I think will last me for years to come.
My friend Shelby always wears the Vans Ultraranges so I’ve had my eye on them for a while. The obsession is real! They are so cushioned! Like little wearable clouds for your feet. I’m a huge fan of Hokas but these might reign supreme.
Homey Bits: We bought a new living room rug! I love it so much more than our previous rug. After rearranging the dog crates (again) our space feels much roomier for playtime. We were able to move our Nugget play couch behind our real sofa so the kids have full access to any configuration they want now and I no longer feel like it’s constantly in our way.
We’ve tried out a toy rotation a few times and it doesn’t seem to work for our family. My daughter inevitably ends up pulling things out of the bins in her closet. I think the only real solution for us is to declutter or organize what we have in a way that’s more functional. I enjoyed the toy storage ideas in this article. I always forget about vertical space!
Eat: I’ve been saving lots of TikTok toast recipes recently. My favorite combo so far has been avocado toast topped with crushed red pepper, bacon, and eggs scrambled with cottage cheese. Gotta get that protein in.
Grocery budgeting has been something I’ve been struggling with a lot lately. After chatting with a few friends to come up with a plan, I’m committing to shopping at Lidl more often. Four dinners for the week plus 4 adorable Little People Disney character sets rang up to $90 vs the $160 I spent the previous week on just lunch stuff and milk from Kroger. Yikes! I’m putting away the Little People for our Easter baskets next month.
Listen: We jumped to buy the new Peppa Pig Yoto Cards and joined the Yoto Club while we were at it. I can’t sing enough praises about the Yoto player. It’s part of our nighttime routine to listen to stories while my preschooler falls asleep. I’m hoping to buy my son the mini-player for Christmas.
Suki Waterhouse is in the new Daisy Jones & The Six miniseries and I love her song Moves. It’s one I find myself putting on repeat often. Take a listen.
I’m participating in Brittany’s (@brittanysbookclub) Book Pics in March challenge so now’s a great time to follow me on Instagram if you haven’t already. I’m having a lot of fun getting creative like in my old school content creation days and enjoying connecting with other Bookstagrammers to see their interpretations of each daily prompt.
That’s it from me. For now, here’s a quick poll.
I really enjoyed the first few episodes of Daisy Jones, too! I last minute decided to reread it last week before watching (I had a few hours to kill on two plane rides) and was so happy I did. I think I liked it even more the second time around.
