This is so great, Kuleigh. And ngl: I am shocked your kids are already back. (Then again, it's law in Wisconsin that school can't start until after Labor Day -- a layover from the days when kids were needed to toil in the fields with the rest of their families to make sure the engine of agriculture kept running... so everyone's start date seems early compared to that.)

I’d love that! It is SO HOT here that it feels unfair. No outdoor play for the kids.

Yeah, that’s crazy. Many schools here aren’t air conditioned, so there’s no way we could send kids to school in your kind of heat.

Same in Vermont!

I love this Kuleigh, especially the way you’ve organized making days of the week fun and exciting. The tradition when I was growing up was movie and pizza on Fridays and some of my best memories of my family are from those nights.

I thought of you the other day when someone mentioned how much they’d love having year-round school and I think I responded with “it has its pros and cons” thinking about the things you’ve mentioned here.

It's so good to hear that Friday night tradition stuck with you. I'm pinpointing my specific age here but I absolutely loved the ABC TGIF lineup in the 90s. Kids these days don't understand having to wait a week or months for the next episode in a series! It was something to look forward to. And yes, year-round school does have its pros and cons.

Oh this comment hit me with all the nostalgia. I feel so bad for them... the anticipation was half the fun!

I'm saving this list for when my oldest goes back in mid-Aug! Where do you live that you go back so early?! 🤯

We live in SC and our school district went to a modified year-round schedule last year! It's still very new to us.

Oh wow! I could see pluses and minuses to that. Honestly, I'm at the point in summer where I'm ready for my kids to go back 🤣

This is making me cry!!!! With my biggest little about to start kindergarten I’m just trying to hold my shit together for him so I don’t project even more nerves on the situation than are already there!!! This is such a helpful list with so many great and simple ideas and I am going to use them all in the next few weeks. We start on the 15th … not as early as y’all but way earlier than my PNW friends! Thanks so much for compiling this list and I hope all the friends are in 1st grade.

Thank you! I'm glad this was helpful. You've got this... both of you! It's A LOT on everyone but I'm confident you'll find a routine that sticks.

Love your rituals, so thoughtful! And thanks for the Buddy Bench book rec, our kids have a Buddy Bench at their school and I never new this, I'm definitely getting that book. :)

We do root beer float cheers on the last day of school and the first day of school and it's become my favorite way to celebrate the transitional bookends!

That book is perfect, then! A few of the schools here have the buddy bench and I love the idea. I hope I teach my kids to be kind and inclusive. I love your first/last day of school tradition.

Such great ideas for rituals! I'm looking for new family traditions that we can start with my toddler and I'll be implementing some of these!
